Great marketing is not complicated, although it is frequently made to seem that way by people who benefit from the confusion. The fundamental idea is simple: you find the people who genuinely need what you make, and you tell them a true story about it, clearly and repeatedly, until they trust you enough to buy. A really effective lifecycle programme quietly nurtures that trust over months, sending the right message at exactly the right moment, and it absolutely compounds when the underlying product is genuinely good. Write plainly. Cut the adverbs. Respect the reader.

The voices

Each voice sets how long a sentence may run before it is flagged. Stevenson keeps a tight, boyish clip; Dumas moves at the pace of a duel; Thompson tolerates a careening run-on if it earns its speed; Homer lets the line roll like the wine-dark sea. These are impressions of each writer's rhythm, offered as targets to write toward, not scholarship.
